This Fourth of July weekend, we have an opportunity to thank our men and women in uniform by donating to the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund. The fund is set up to help ease some of the financial pressure for National Guard and Reserve service members deployed in support of the global war on terror. Fueled by generous donations from Illinois citizens and corporations, the fund has already distributed $6,309,000 to meet the needs of 11,392 filed applications from Illinois military families.
In response to the 37 weekend shootings in Chicago in April, the Tinley Park and NIU massacres and the Supreme Court decision on guns, here's a compromise that fits the NRA's recommendation to arm everyone: that the government provides all Americans at birth, with an AK-47 assault rifle or a .357 Magnum or Glock handgun.
The Sun-Times is featuring readers' ideas about how to make ends meet. Tuesday's money saver gave several tips on tracking health care expenses and tax deductions, among other ideas. One reader was critical, and she responded online:
I must mention a letter sent to our licensing agents by a Robert E. Bierie, the performing arts supervisor of Wilmette Park District. The letter requests that for their production of "Ragtime," they be allowed to substitute the words "darkie," "boy" and "coon" for the offending n-word.
When the international Olympic people wake up to the shootings and the high sales taxes and the poor infrastructure the foolishness re: the county and city governments we will not (and should not) get the bid.
Infidelity means so many different things to different people. To some, merely having a conversation with someone else about how frustrated your partner is making you is infidelity. To others, a hug or a kiss. To others, the act of fornication itself. Or it can be a massage, sharing a confidence that the other partner feels should be reserved for them. There's the physical, and the mental. The bad thing about infidelity is that with some people, even telling a family member how frustrated the partner is making you is a form of infidelity.
I am profoundly disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the District of Columbia's gun law.
Regarding ("Less than 10 percent strongly feel students get their money's worth" by Dave Newbart, June 25, 2008):
As the sister of a gun homicide victim, I share Mayor Daley's disappointment with the narrow U.S. Supreme Court ruling creating an individual right to keep a gun in the home. The news is not all bad, though; at the same time, the entire court agreed that commonsense regulation of deadly firearms is fully constitutional. Those regulations include universal background checks, restrictions on gun trafficking, controlling military-style assault weapons, even licensing and registration of guns. These measures save lives and now should be vigorously pursued.
